Recommendation: For most Windows users, we highly recommend using a driver update utility such as DriverDoc [Download DriverDoc - Product by Solvusoft] to help update Prolific USB drivers. DriverDoc takes away the hassle and headaches of making sure you are downloading and installing the correct ieee-1284 USB to paralell port's drivers for your operating system.
ieee-1284 USB to paralell port errors often stem from incompatible or outdated device drivers. Drivers can work one day, and suddenly stop working the next day, for a variety of reasons. The good news is that the USB system driver can always be modified to solve the laptop dilemma.
It is often hard to find a right solution to a ieee-1284 USB to paralell port hardware-related error by visiting Prolific's website. Locating, downloading, and manually updating your Windows ieee-1284 USB to paralell port driver does take a lot of time, making the process unbearable for most users. Using defective or non-functional drivers will cause more damage and errors on your machine.
Okay... I powered up the 6L and went through the Add Printer routine. I started the Windows Update to add printer drivers and it just hangs there (30 minutes). The IEEE-1284 adapter issues appears to be resolved by swapping the cable to the front USB port.
During the iterations, sometimes I would get the "Installing device driver software" and other times I didn't. I would hot swap ports and sometimes it resolved the IEEE-1284 issue and sometimes it wouldn't.
When the IEEE-1284 issue is present, both the IEEE-1284 Adapter and the Laserjet 6L show as present and working properly. When using the current driver or replacing the driver, the end result is always the same: HP Laser Jet 2200 Series PCL 5 Driver... which is the first one in the drop down list. Windows Update does nothing.
It is strange that Windows 7 recognizes the HP Laserjet 6L, and the IEEE-1284 Adapter but won't actually install or update the driver. The only driver it installs, is the IEEE-1284 adapter and that is only 50% of the time and only when the HP Laserjet 6L is not recognized at the same time.
I have a new Dell XPS desktop with Windows 7 (64-bit). My hp laser jet 4000 will still not run despite doing all your steps, including a parallel to usb cable (IEEE-1284 controller). It shows the printer with a green check mark, but i receive no test page. The same cable/printer works on my new dell laptop (also with Windows 7). Any advice/guidance would be greated appreciated.
I just got a windows 7 machine have older laser printers (Lexmark 4039-12R & IBM Info print 20 4320-001) do you know if the ptr drivers are available so that I can use a USB to Parallel printer cable with these printers. Also I ordered XP mode as part of the windows 7 load. Does this help? 2ff7e9595c
